Abstract

Results of an investigation are reported on the effect of measurement noise on the ability of recently proposed methods to estimate contaminant concentration profiles in soil from the intensities of neutron-induced capture-gamma photon intensities measured at the soil surface. In particular, the Latin hypercube method and simulated noisy data are used to quantify the uncertainty in the estimated contaminant profiles that can be expected as a result of statistical noise in the measured data.
